Bloody Nested Rats

Bloody Nested Rats

Do you hear that scurrying? No. No you don’t because these rats are just tasty meatloaf.

Willard

Okay, I know what you are thinking, but trust me on this, they taste delicious.  The recipe is straight forward, but does require a little prep time and careful attention to detail. Give yourself a little time on this one. Additionally, rats on the menu will always be a legendary conversation piece.

We have also use this recipe for Shrek, to make “Weed Rats”!

Bloody Nested Rats

Willard – a long time favorite movie of mine, is ripe with horror tones, scary imagery and really terrible things done by men and animals alike. We made Bloody Nested Rats for this movie!
Cook Time 20 minutes
Total Time 35 minutes
Servings: 6 + rats

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds ground beef
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup Italian Style breadcrumbs
  • 3 tbls ketchup
  • 1 tbls Worcestershire Sauce
  • 1 tsp dried parsely
  • 1 tsp dried onion flakes
  • 1 carrot
  • 3 black olives

Method

  1. Preheat over to 350.
  2. Line a square baking dish with foil.
  3. Cut carrots into slices and then cut the slices in half for the mouse ears. Set aside.
  4. Slice the olives into thin, then cut in half for the mouse eyes. Set aside.
  5. Beat the egg and add to the ground beef, incorporating it well.
  6. Add ketchup and Worcestershire sauce the ground beef and egg mixture and knead.
  7. Add breadcrumbs and mix by hand.
  8. Shape your rats by making large meatballs and then pressing the sides in to elongate.
  9. Make smaller meatball shapes to make the rat heads and then place the carrot ears on the head. Add the olives to make eyes.
  10. Cook at 350 for 20 minutes (depending on the size of your "rats")
  11. Serve the rats on a bed of mashed potatoes or shredded veggies (like zucchini spirals) and cover with a drizzle of ketchup to make them look bloody.

Notes

Make these rats in small or large form depending on your preference, but be sure to mold them well.  To keep the carrots and eyes from drying out, add them after your "rats" are cooked.

Gentle attention to detail is nice, but as long as the shape is right, your dish will look great and be as gross looking as you'd imagine!
